Sun 11 Apr 2010 - B Team Face Anxious Face Over Promotion < back

League Division 3B
Shannon Hibs B 2 - 2 Meanus
Shannon Hibs B team started their last game of the season knowing that if they won the match they would have secured promotion for the second successive year and the possibility a second successive league title, but Meanus who were also playing their last game of the season were out to spoil the party for Hibs. The game itself started slowly enough with Hibs having the better of possession in the open twenty minutes, Meanus did begin to come more into the game but neither side had any real clear cut opportunities in the opening half an hour. Just after the thirty minute mark Hibs won a corner, Ross Walsh sent the ball into the box, Sean Lindsay headed the ball on into the six yard box where Gavin Lundy headed past the Meanus keeper to give Hibs the lead. The game then took a desicive twist in the following ten minutes, shortly after taking the lead Hibs broke up the left hand side and the ball was played into the box, after a scramble in the six yard area Kenneth Buckley fired home from close range but the ref adjudged him to be offside and disallowed the goal. From the resulting free out, Meanus broke down the right flank, the ball was crossed in from the byline across the six yard area where the Meanus forward was able to shoot past Gavin O'Donnell in the Hibs goal from close range. Minutes later Meanus attacked down the middle of the pitch and sent a through ball into the box, Damien Halpin was the covering defender but he was adjudged to have fouled just outside the box after a late tackle. The resulting free was very well struck towards the top left hand corner with Gavin O'Donnell unable to stop the ball from going in and gave Meanus a 2 - 1 lead at half time.

Hibs started the second half brightly but were limited by Meanus in getting any real attacking chances. Mid way through the half Hibs were awarded a free kick just outside the box left of center, Jamie Walker stepped up and sent a rocket of a shot past the wall and the Meanus keeper into the goal but the ref again disallowed a goal for Hibs this time stating that the wall had not been set and that he hadn't blown the whistle. Hibs began to put a good deal of pressure on Meanus but couldnt get the goal they needed, Ross Walsh saw his shot go just wide of the right post after a break down the left and Gavin Lundy was just short of reaching a great ball across the 6 yard box sent in by Ross Walsh. The game began to get somewhat fractious with both sides guilty of losing their discipline with the referee having to intervene in a number of disagreements between the two sides. The match went into the last five minutes with Hibs still searching for an equalising goal, Willie O'Donoghue won a free kick on the right hand touch line, Hibs sent everyone into the box. Gerard McGettigan sent the ball into the box, the ball broke to Damien Halpin who fired a low shot into the right hand corner past the Meanus keeper to level things and to give Hibs a potentially crucial point. Hibs pushed for a winner in the final minutes but after another incident between the two sides Damien Halpin and a Meanus player were both red carded by the ref. In the last minute Hibs had a number of corners but couldn't get the winning goal and the sides shared the points.
Hibs now have an anxious wait to see if they will be promoted this season, all eyes will be on St. Pauls who are in third place when they play their final game of the season on Thursday, if St. Pauls fail to win their match Hibs will be promoted.
