Sun 22 Nov 2009 - Hibs knock Regional out of FAI < back

FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round
Regional United 2 - 3 Shannon Hibernians

Shannon Hibs pulled off one of the shocks of the season when they knocked out premier high flyers Regional in the third round of the FAI junior cup.

Regional may have been tipped to go a long way in the competition but from the off Hibs showed their intent with Shane O’Connor winning possession and fired over within the opening minute of the match. Hibs did take the lead on four minutes after a throw in by BJ Cantillon was struck on the volley by Eric Ogrin, his shot was saved but Kieran Hackett was first to react and fired the ball into the back of the net from close range. Minutes later Hibs could have doubled their lead after a volley from James Fitzgerald went inches wide. Regional then went straight up the field and levelled on 9 minutes. Twenty minutes in Regional took the lead when Mike Aherne won the ball in midfield, he made a run forward and shot from outside the box, scoring, despite the efforts of Darren Whelan in the Hibs goal. Regional may have been expected to build on their lead but Hibs reacted well and levelled the game on thirty minutes after a superb goal by Davy Wall. Wall picked up the ball from a throw in and volleyed the ball into the top corner past Kieran McMahon in the Regional goal.

With conditions as they were, chances for either team were limited but on the hour mark Hibs took a deserved lead, Peter Barron crossed the ball into the box and Eddie Dunne who had just come on shortly before fired home. Regional pushed for an equaliser and in the closing stages of the game came close to levelling the game with Marty Foley crossing the ball into the box but Shane O’Donoghues shot went just over. James Fitzgerald was then very unlucky not to score for Hibs after an excellent reaction save by McMahon from Fitzgeralds header. Regional had one last chance in the final minute of the game after O’Connell crossed the ball into the box but Aherne fired his close range shot across the face of the Hibs goal. Hibs can take great heart from this performance and if they can continue this form should go a long way this season.
