Tue 5 May 2009 - Park defeat Caherdavin in league < back

League Division 1B
Park AFC 4 – 0 Caherdavin

Coming into the business end of the season this was a must win game for Park in a league which has 5 teams all in with a shout for the league title. Prior to the game Park were 3 points behind Caherdavin so this was a real 6 pointer.

With only 10 minutes gone in the game Park took the lead, Rob Wall collected the ball in his own half and played a perfectly weighted ball over the top. Gary Higgins ran onto the ball and slotted the ball past the keeper with a calm finish. Caherdavin responded well and for the next ten minutes putting Park under a degree of pressure but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

On 30 minutes Park could have doubled their lead, starting with another ball over the top, Graham Carey this time running onto the ball, but his shot was blocked by the Caherdavin defender.

Park started the second half brightly and with seven minutes gone Park doubled their lead. Pa Canavan won the ball outside the box, played a through ball into the box, Graham Carey ran onto the ball and managed to get a touch before the oncoming keeper and saw the ball nestle into the left hand corner of the goal.

Gary Higgins was causing major problems to the Caherdavin defence and on 20 minutes again found himself clear on goal from a ball over the top but this time the Caherdavin keeper made a good save.

Park then got their third five minutes later. From a free kick on the right hand touchline close to the half-way line, Rob Wall sent a great in-swinging ball into the box towards the 6 yard area. Gary Higgins managed to get a touch to the ball which was enough to take the ball past the keeper. 2 minutes later it should have been 4 when Gary Higgins made yet another great run into the box and squared the ball to Graham Carey. A Caherdavin defender did well to put Carey under pressure and he saw his saw his shot go just wide.

With five minutes to go Caherdavin were reduced to ten men when their left back with sent off for a second book-able offence. In a particularly physical match, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Caherdavin had a player sent out with a number of their players receiving yellow cards.

In the final minute of the game Gary Higgins rounded off a great individual performance with his third goal of the game. He received the ball inside the Caherdavin half and a great first touch spun the covering Caherdavin defender, he ran through on goal and slotted past the Caherdavin keeper to claim his second hat-trick in as many games.

This was a great performance by Park with Gary Higgins and Graham Carey playing very well upfront, Eddie Dunne and Rob Wall battled well in midfield to deny Caherdavin time on the ball and the defence did well with Fintan Quinn not having to make any saves of note throughout the game.

Park Team: Fintan Quinn, Gareth Quirke, Finbar Neville, BJ Cantillon, Pa Divanney, Eddie Dunne, Pa Canavan, Rob Wall, Sean McDonald, Gary Higgins, Graham Carey
