League Division 1B
Fairview Rangers B 1 - 1 Park AFC
Park played fellow promotion contenders Fairview last week knowing that a win would give them a huge advantage in the run in to a very tightly contested league. Both teams started well but neither team managed to create any clear cut opportunities in the opening half an hour. With thirty five minutes gone in the half Sean McDonald played a great cross field ball to Graham Carey, he cut into the box but his shot was deflected out of play for a corner. Rob Wall swung in a great ball into the box, Eddie Dunne rose uncontested and headed the ball back across the goal and into the top corner of the goal to take a deserved lead. Three minutes later Park could have gone two up when Rob Wall received the ball 30 yards from goal, he turned and struck a great shot but the Fairview keeper managed to make a finger tip save to push the ball just wide of the left post.
Park started the second half well and there first opportunity fell to Rob Wall when the ball was played through the middle and managed to stay on side but his volley went narrowly wide. Shortly afterwards Park won a throw on the right side of the pitch in the Fairview half, the ball was played into the box, Gary Higgins took a great first touch and volleyed across goal, Graham Carey just failed to connect with a header and the ball went just over the bar. Park were just about shading possession and control of the game but with twenty minutes gone in the second half conceded a needless free kick on the edge of their box. The Fairview player stepped up and shot a great free kick over the wall and into the top right hand corner leaving Fintan Quinn in the Park goal with no chance. Park thought they had re-taken the league five minutes later when Andy Fitzgerald's deflected shot from outside the box was tapped into the goal by Graham Carey but the ref adjudged that he was offside. In the last twenty minutes of the game both teams had chances to take the lead, Graham Carey was unlucky on two occasions when he thought he was through on goal but was called back for offside. In the last minute of the game Fairview could have stolen the victory when a shot from twelve yards out went inches over the bar. A draw was the result that neither team was looking for but both teams are still remain right in contention for promotion this season.
